Could Donald Trump be a Russian asset(资产;有价值的情报人员)? The headline on a review in the Guardian of my new book Betrayal has provoked(激起,引发) heated international debate(激烈的国际辩论). Written by the historian Lawrence Freedman(劳伦斯·弗里德曼,英国历史学家), the piece generated(产生,引起) thousands of comments from across Europe and beyond on social media. Many people responded with a single word: “Duh!(“废话!”
Trump’s relationship with Vladimir Putin is the biggest mystery(谜,神秘的事物) in international politics. In 2017 I wrote a book called Collusion, which set out(阐述,说明) Moscow’s operation to support and cultivate(培养,建立(关系)) Trump, going back decades. The US president, of course, denies links with Russia. But in his second term, his behaviour towards Putin has been as weird(古怪的,离奇的) and perplexing(令人费解的) as during his first.
For example, at the Alaska summit last year the US president applauded his Russian counterpart(对应的人,同行), meeting him at Anchorage airport and rolling out a red carpet(铺红地毯,隆重欢迎). Trump seemed uncharacteristically(一反常态地) nervous, as he waited for Putin to emerge from his plane. At their joint press conference after talks, he allowed the Russian president to speak first. It was a bizarre(怪诞的,异乎寻常的) act of deference(顺从,尊重). Why?
Consequences remain the same
