Most family annihilator(灭门者,灭绝者)s are men. It’s a grim fact that such incidents are common enough to have a discernible(可识别的,可辨别的) pattern. The massacre is carried out by a husband and father, often one who is on the verge of(濒临,即将) bankruptcy or divorce; typically, it forms the finale(终曲,结尾) of a long reign of(长期的统治) domestic violence terror.
About half the time, the perpetrator(犯罪者,行凶者) kills himself after slaughter(屠杀,杀戮)ing his family. Gun use is common – a large number of what are termed “mass shootings” in the United States are in fact(事实上,实际上) family annihilation killings, in which a man turns his weapon on(将武器对准) his family members. Other times, the killer uses knives, or fires.
This kind of killing does not always make the news(成为新闻,被报道). When it does, news organizations often run(刊登,发表) family photos, in which the killer smiles on a beach or beside the Grand Canyon with his arm around the wife and children he will later shoot or strangle(勒死,扼死).
