My grandma was as hard as nails(铁石心肠,非常强硬). She had just turned 17 when the Nazis entered her village in the Kyiv region, near what is now the city of Bucha.(纳粹闯进她位于基辅地区、如今布恰市附近的村庄时,她刚满17岁。) She hid in the attic to avoid being taken for forced labour(强制劳役). They didn’t find her that time, but a few weeks later she was caught working in the fields. They put her in a cattle wagon(运牲口的车厢) and took her to Germany. She escaped and walked a couple of hundred kilometres back to her village. Grandma said that life was hard for everybody during the war, but she was lucky.
In the past month, two of my friends here in Kyiv happened to tell(碰巧告诉) me that their hands have started shaking during Russian airstrike(空袭)s. Everybody who knows that my hands shake during airstrikes tells me their stories. One day, during an airstrike in the Donetsk region, I had a meltdown(情绪崩溃) and have never recovered. Today you could say I am an ambassador for people whose hands shake during airstrikes.(今天你可以说,我是那些空袭时手会抖的人的大使。)
Those two friends said the same exact thing: their hands never used to shake before and now they do.(那两位朋友说了完全一样的话:她们的手以前从不发抖,现在却抖了。) Each one wrote: “I don’t understand what’s just happened to me.”
