For two decades, Phyllis Nduva, 72, has grown mangoes and citrus(柑橘属水果) in Wote, a town in Kenya’s eastern Makueni County. In the beginning, she only had to worry about(不得不担心) ordinary fruit flies(果蝇). She handled them simply, buying chemical pesticides(农药,杀虫剂) and spraying her trees whenever they appeared.
But then, in 2014, the false codling moth(假苹果蠹蛾) turned up(出现,露面) on her farm. The small brown creature had been causing havoc(大破坏,浩劫) in South Africa for years, and in 2007 it was spotted(发现,注意到) in Kenya.
Research into how to deal with the moth was continuing, but no one Nduva knew had information about how to stop it from spreading across her 8-hectare (20-acre) orchard.(关于如何对付这种蛾子的研究仍在继续,但恩杜瓦认识的人中,没有人知道如何阻止它在她的8公顷果园里蔓延。)
