Even at the age of nine, Maria Cristina de Sales knew exactly when to(确切知道何时) ask her mother’s colleagues at the slaughterhouse(屠宰场) for a piece of the pig they were butchering(屠宰,切肉): when they got close to the pork leg(猪腿肉), her favourite part.
When she grew up, Sales followed the path of many others from Brazil’s deprived(贫困的,被剥夺的) north-east and moved south in search of(寻找,寻求) better work opportunities. She arrived in Rio de Janeiro and, unable to afford a home in tourist-heavy(游客密集的) south zone, moved to a favela(贫民窟) further north.
She crossed the city every day to work as a receptionist(接待员) and secretary(秘书), but only really found her footing(站稳脚跟,找到立足点) 15 years later when she and her husband opened a burger restaurant, inside the favela.
