With many technological developments, from algorithm-driven(算法驱动的) social media to AI, many people assume there’s a degree of(某种程度的) inevitability(不可避免性) to their widespread(广泛的) adoption in society.
The argument goes something like this(大致是这样的): once the ideas and means(手段、方法) to produce the tech are known, then it is inevitable that its usage will spread and we’ll essentially(基本上、本质上) be stuck with(被迫接受、无法摆脱) it. So therefore we need to accept this and adjust our lives to live with the tech and use it (or at least tolerate(容忍、忍受) it).
This argument seems pretty straightforward(直截了当的、简单的), since we’ve seen many tech-driven disruption(颠覆、扰乱)s play out(发生、展开) in the past 20 years or so. Uber displacing the taxi industry and the rise of “gig workers(零工经济劳动者)”. Algorithmic social media displacing, well, everything. Privacy-invading, hyper-targeted(超精准定位的) advertising reshaping the internet.
