Resisting authoritarianism(威权主义) is the second-highest priority for Democrats’ college-educated base(受过大学教育的基本盘). But for working-class Americans, it’s only the 19th priority (out of 20), we found in a new survey. The gap between these two groups was larger than on any other issues: elites prioritized resisting authoritarianism an astonishing 33 percentage points more than non-elites did.(这两个群体之间的差距比任何其他议题都大:精英群体对抵抗威权主义的重视程度比非精英群体高出惊人的33个百分点。)
Democrats’ dilemma(困境) is that their college-educated base insists they stand up to(挺身对抗) Donald Trump’s attacks on democracy, but they also need to win working-class votes. The way to thread that needle is to recognize that what’s needed to defend democracy in the short term is different from what’s needed to defend it in the long term.(解决这一难题的办法是认识到,短期内捍卫民主所需的手段与长期所需的不同。)
In the short term, Democrats’ base is right: immediate action is needed in the courts, exemplified by the more than 150 lawsuits(诉讼) that Democracy Forward has filed against the Trump administration and the 82 filed by California attorney general Rob Bonta, contesting(质疑、抗辩) alleged corruption, funding cuts, election interference(选举干预) and more. Action in the streets is powerful, too, from the protests in Minnesota to the mobilization(动员) of more than 8 million people (chiefly highly-educated women) at No Kings rallies(“无王日”集会) across the country. But while #resistance(“抵抗”运动) is necessary, it’s not enough. Democrats also need to take two additional steps.
