As £72m in donations makes its way(流向;抵达) to Reform UK’s bank accounts, consider what Nigel Farage said on the eve of(在……前夕) Britain’s vote to leave the European Union a decade ago. “This referendum is the people versus the establishment(人民对抗建制派),” he declared. “It is the vested interest(既得利益), it’s the rich, it’s the big business.”
Just two years ago, Farage assailed(猛烈抨击) “an unholy alliance(邪恶联盟) of big business, big banks and big government”. He is also the same man who, when he debated with the then Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, in 2014, claimed to “represent the mercantile, trading, entrepreneurial end of society”, while his opponent “represents big banks, big government and big business”.(也正是这个人,2014年与时任自民党领袖尼克·克莱格辩论时,声称自己代表社会中经商、贸易、创业的那一端,而对手代表大银行、大政府和大企业。)
To be clear, Farage’s political outfit(组织;团体) is being bankrolled(提供资金;资助) by two cryptobillionaires. One of them is Ben Delo, who once developed high-frequency trading systems for JP Morgan(摩根大通,美国最大银行之一). That investment bank was a particular bete noire(特别憎恶的人或事物) of Farage: when it backed the Remain campaign(2016年英国留欧阵营), he savaged(痛斥;猛烈攻击) “the unholy alliance of big banks and big politics(大银行与大政治)”. The other is the Thailand-based cryptobillionaire Christopher Harborne, who gave Farage his pre-election £5m gift and provided two-thirds of Reform’s funding – until now, that is.(另一位是常驻泰国的加密货币亿万富翁克里斯托弗·哈伯恩,他曾在大选前送给法拉奇500万英镑,并提供了改革党三分之二的资金——不过,那是直到现在为止。)
