Good morning. Remember the Makerfield test? When Andy Burnham was elected as an MP back in June, he reassured wary voters that the constituency(选区;选民) was not a “stepping stone(跳板,垫脚石)” (to be fair, it was a bit) but a “touchstone(试金石,检验标准)”. He meant that the policies his government devised would have to matter on the high streets(商业街,主街) of Ashton and Hindley Green.
“A Makerfield test at the heart of British politics will make sure that the places Westminster(威斯敏斯特,代指英国中央政府) has neglected(被忽视的,被冷落的) will now get fairness,” he said.
As the Commons breaks for the jamboree of high ideas, low gossip and crap karaoke that is party conference season, it’s a good moment to ask how Burnham’s early decisions as prime minister – he’s been at it under two months, right enough – meet that test and what it tells us about his government.(下议院休会迎来政党会议季,此刻正好追问伯纳姆的早期决策如何经受考验。)
