As he stood in Riyadh(利雅得(沙特首都)) last September, the world looked like a very different place for Pakistan’s most powerful man, Gen(将军(General缩写)) Asim Munir(阿西姆·穆尼尔(巴基斯坦陆军参谋长)).
The country’s army chief was there to witness the signing of a historic defence pact(防御协议) with Saudi Arabia, which he had personally orchestrated(精心策划、一手促成) with the crown prince(王储), Mohammed bin Salman.
To Munir, it appeared to be a highly strategic win: Riyadh would provide cash-strapped(资金短缺的) Pakistan with billions of dollars of life-saving(救命的、至关重要的) investments and loans. In exchange, Pakistan agreed to train up the Saudi military, and Pakistan’s armed forces would defend Saudi Arabia in the unlikely event of an attack on its territory.(作为交换,巴基斯坦同意训练沙特军队,并且一旦沙特领土遭受攻击(尽管可能性不大),巴基斯坦武装部队将出兵保卫沙特。)
