Rob Stickle was six years old and waiting to see The Empire Strikes Back(《帝国反击战》,星球大战系列第二部) when a ripple(涟漪;波动) passed through the crowd. His mother hoist(举起,抬起)ed him on to her shoulders to see a man loping down one of Toronto’s busiest streets.
“I was a Star Wars fanatic(狂热爱好者), and I remember saying to mom: ‘He has a robot leg.’”
Who Stickle saw that mid-July day in 1980 was the 21-year-old Terry Fox on his journey to run across the entire breadth(宽度;广度) of Canada. Residents packed the city’s sidewalks for miles to catch a glimpse(瞥见,看一眼). By the time Stickle saw him, and after nearly 2,200 exhausting(令人精疲力竭的) miles, Fox had completed more than half of his “Marathon of Hope” in aid of(为了帮助,为支援) cancer research. The distinctive style of Fox’s run – a kind of limping hop – was the result of a journey undertaken on a crude and ill-fitting(不合身的) prosthetic(假肢的,义肢的) leg made of plastic, leather and metal.
