Canada has been invited to become the first “associate member(准成员国)” of the EU by the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen(欧盟委员会主席冯德莱恩).
In an unprecedented(史无前例的) offer, von der Leyen said on Wednesday that the EU and Canada “see the world with the same eyes(看待世界的方式相同)” through shared democratic values and common approaches to many big issues, from AI to climate breakdown(气候崩溃), the Ukraine war and geopolitics(地缘政治).
Speaking in the presence of(在……在场的情况下) the Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney, at the European parliament in Strasbourg, she said: “We want to bring the relationship with Canada to the highest level possible. We must urgently reimagine(重新构想) our partnerships. So, I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to be the first associate member of the EU.”
