Every time a public figure in entertainment speaks up about politics in a way deemed(被认为) “controversial”, it is as if it’s the first time that has ever happened(仿佛破天荒头一遭). The outrage(愤怒、义愤) is fresh; critics rediscover and announce, as if they have just captured an elusive(难以捉摸的), profound notion, that art should be separate from politics. A form of disciplining(规训、惩戒) is dispensed. Please, Mr or Miss Moneybags, with your preening notions that you have anything intelligent or informed to say about immigration policy or Palestine.(拜托,大款先生或大款小姐,别自以为你们对移民政策或巴勒斯坦有什么聪明或知情的见解。) Stick to football. Stick to pop music. Stick to acting. Stick to children’s shows.
Even at a time when a political moment has engulfed(吞噬) everything, this response continues to be born again(重生、再次出现), without regard for history or ability to confront rupture(断裂、决裂). The horror of Gaza has broken the art world, roiled(搅动、激怒) Hollywood, fractured(使分裂) literary institutions. And still, as Ed Sheeran(英国流行歌手) stands alone on stage following the withdrawal of all his support acts (in solidarity with Macklemore(美国说唱歌手), who was removed from the tour due to a pro-Palestinian speech), he told his audience that he wants his music to be “about unity, not division”. The speed at which his tour unravelled is not evidence of the incompatibility of music and politics, necessitating that they remain separate to avoid that “division”.(他的巡演迅速瓦解,并不能证明音乐与政治水火不容、必须保持分离以避免那种“分裂”。) It is a study in how it is becoming increasingly unnatural to separate them.
Again, this is not new. The enmeshment(纠缠、交织) of entertainment and politics is organic and part of many conflicts and political outrages in recent memory. Vietnam, South Africa, Darfur – all had a cohort(一群、一批) of celebrities involved in objecting, lobbying(游说) and raising awareness. Figures such as Macklemore or Gary Lineker(英国足球评论员、难民政策批评者) or Mark Ruffalo or Ms Rachel(美国儿童节目主持人) are not breaking with convention(打破惯例) and plunging(使陷入) industries into turmoil(动荡、混乱) and controversy, but partaking in(参与) a long legacy of activism that includes, to name a few, Nina Simone(美国歌手、民权活动家), Donald Sutherland, Kurt Vonnegut, Marlon Brando(美国演员、奥斯卡拒奖), Mia Farrow, George Michael and George Clooney.
