I am walking between carriages in search of a cup of tea on a train travelling over 100 miles an hour from Liverpool to London when I see half the people in my carriage in deep conversations with a machine: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini to name a few.(我正走在一列从利物浦开往伦敦、时速超过100英里的火车车厢之间,想找杯茶喝,这时我看到车厢里一半的人都在与机器深入交谈:ChatGPT、Claude和Gemini等等。) I am meant to be on sabbatical(学术休假), the rare stretch of academic life reserved(保留的) for slow thinking. Around me, almost nobody is thinking slowly.
This is not limited to a train carriage. Half of the adults surveyed in one US study reported using an AI chatbot, one example of how fast people are entering a relationship with their AI tools, which now receive more of our questions, problems and drafts than our friends and colleagues do.(美国一项研究中,半数受访成年人表示使用过AI聊天机器人,这只是一个例子,说明人们正以多快的速度与AI工具建立关系——如今,这些工具收到的我们的问题、难题和草稿,比朋友和同事收到的还多。)
I am one of them; I research advanced technologies for a living(以…… I sceptically(怀疑地) entered this relationship to satisfy my curiosity, and my very first request of ChatGPT was to proofread(校对) an email. The second was to plan a four-day holiday, and the third was to compare home loans. I sent that AI-proofread email, took that short holiday, and refinanced(重新贷款) our mortgage with a better rate – all based on its advice. The relationship started growing and I started giving it more complicated tasks: summarise an article, collate(整理) recent findings on a specific topic and redesign my kitchen. What would have taken hours took only minutes.(原本需要数小时的事,几分钟就完成了。) I trusted nothing and checked every line, as trust in any relationship accrues(累积) exchange by exchange. I did not like the kitchen design it produced.
