As Labour party conference(大会;会议) approaches, politicians will debate spending priorities, fiscal(财政的) pressures and the UK’s place in the world(英国的国际地位). Before those discussions begin, I want ministers to picture a hospital ward I visited in Sierra Leone with Unicef (United Nations Children’s Fund).(在这些讨论开始之前,我希望部长们想象一下我与联合国儿童基金会在塞拉利昂探访过的一间医院病房。)
Inside the special-care baby unit at Makeni regional hospital were rows of tiny premature(早产的) babies, some no bigger than my hand. Around them stood dedicated(尽职的;专注的) nurses and anxious parents, all willing these newborns to survive(期盼这些新生儿活下来).
Then I saw something that stopped me in my tracks(让我驻足;使我震惊). It was 2019, and I noticed a UK aid sticker fixed above a tiny incubator(保温箱;孵化器). Inside was a premature baby fighting for breath(拼命呼吸;挣扎着喘气). Nearby stood oxygen equipment that staff explained had been funded through UK support. I learned that when power outages struck the hospital, as they often did, that equipment helped keep vulnerable newborns alive.(我得知,当医院停电时——这种情况经常发生——这些设备帮助维持了脆弱新生儿的生命。)
