The writer, teacher and naturalist(博物学家) Joe Harkness, who has died aged 39, was an inspiring advocate(倡导者) for the role that wild nature can play in alleviating(缓解,减轻) depression and helping all minds, but especially neurodivergent(神经多样性的) ones, find joy and peace.
His first book, Bird Therapy (2018), was a notable(显著的,著名的) success from a new generation of authors who found readers online and crowdfunded(众筹) their publication via the now defunct(已倒闭的) Unbound. In Bird Therapy, Harkness told the story of his own breakdown(精神崩溃), near-suicide(险些自杀) and subsequent recovery through watching birds near his home in rural Norfolk(英格兰东部郡,以湿地和观鸟闻名).
Readers responded to his honesty and heartfelt(真挚的) practical advice, as well as the obvious pleasure he found in nature. “In that moment, watching the flock of finches, I was allowing myself to become lost and absorbed in the sights in front of me,” he wrote.(“那一刻,看着那群雀鸟,我让自己沉浸、迷失在眼前的景象中,”他写道。)
