African governments need to shake off the legacy of colonialism and underfunding if their education systems are ever to harness the vast potential of the continent’s young talent, says the public health expert Dr John Nkengasong.(公共卫生专家约翰·恩肯加松博士表示,非洲各国政府若想利用非洲大陆年轻人才的巨大潜力,就必须摆脱殖民主义遗留问题和资金不足的困境。)

Africa’s young demographic(人口结构) – it is the world’s youngest continent with 70% of people aged under 30 – is seen as its greatest asset. But a lack of cohesion between education institutions and employers means graduates in Africa, whose number is rising, are not well prepared when they start work, Nkengasong says.(但恩肯加松指出,教育机构与雇主之间缺乏衔接,意味着数量不断增加的非洲毕业生在开始工作时准备不足。) In an interview with the Guardian, he says students should be primed(使准备好) to address the continent’s socioeconomic problems, whether through influencing public health policy or technological innovation.
He adds that the continent needs to immediately prioritise investment and leadership that will create universities that not only catch up with the rest of the world but leapfrog ahead.(他补充说,非洲大陆需要立即优先考虑投资和领导力,从而打造出不仅能追赶世界其他地区、更能实现跨越式领先的大学。)
