Rajab al-Reefi remembers the day the club’s last skateboard broke. Those pastry-thin(薄如糕点层的) layers of maple(枫木), carefully pressed into a curve, had carried child after child(载着一个又一个孩子) up and down the homemade ramp(坡道)s of the skatepark. Having endured years beyond their typical lifespan, the board’s layers buckled, cracked and finally snapped.(这块滑板早已超期服役多年,最终层板弯曲、开裂,彻底折断。)
At 30, Rajab is a leader of the Gaza skate club, a group that has spent the past decade teaching girls and boys to skate. But Israel’s siege(围困) of Gaza blocks a vast array of(大量的、各种各样的) ordinary household goods from entering the territory(领土、地区), with the Israelis claiming they could be used by Hamas(哈马斯,巴勒斯坦伊斯兰抵抗运动). One of the banned items is a skateboard.
Rajab is a skater in Gaza, a place with almost no boards left. This is what a day in his life(他的一天) looks like.
