For months, parts of Indonesia’s Borneo and Sumatra islands have been ablaze(熊熊燃烧的). The fires are sometimes lit illegally as a cheap way to clear land(清理土地) for plantation(种植园)s of oil palm, of which Indonesia is the world’s largest producer.
So prevalent is the technique that it even has a special term: slash and burn(刀耕火种).
Many of the fires begin as small-scale blaze(大火、烈焰)s. But in hot, dry conditions, can easily spiral out of control(失控、急剧恶化), sending toxic(有毒的) smoke across borders(跨境、越过国界) and affecting the air quality of millions in Indonesia and beyond.
