It took all day to clear a section of road in the Tel al-Hawa neighbourhood in Gaza City. At the end of it, Ahmed Alyan, a UN engineer, was exhausted(精疲力竭的), surrounded by mountains of rubble(堆积如山的瓦砾) despite the day’s work.
“I feel as if we are holding a spoon and trying to empty the sea(就像拿着勺子想舀干大海),” Alyan said, beads of sweat trickling(滴落、流淌) down his forehead after a long, hot summer day.
Alyan is part of a World Food Programme (WFP) team who have been working on Beirut Street, once a busy main thoroughfare(主干道、大道) lined with(两旁排列着) shops, offices and homes and filled with traffic and people. But now it is virtually deserted(空无一人的).
