On 1 January 2023, a few hours after being sworn in(宣誓就职) for his third stint(任期,一段时间) as Brazil’s president, a ravenous(饥肠辘辘的) Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sneaked away(悄悄溜走) from a celebratory cocktail party packed with politicians and diplomats to grab a snack(随便吃点东西) with one of his oldest friends.
“This is your penultimate(倒数第二的) term,” that friend, the Dominican(多明我会的) theologian and writer Frei Betto(巴西多明我会修士、神学家、作家,卢拉挚友), recalls telling Lula as the pair chewed the fat(闲聊,侃大山) in a back room of the foreign ministry in Brasília(巴西利亚(巴西首都)).
Betto says Lula laughed off(一笑置之) his provocation(挑逗,挑衅), insisting: “No, Betto! It’s the last one. I’m done(我干完了,我不干了)!”
