Maricarmen Abascal is a determined(坚定的) woman who uses a wheelchair to get around(四处走动). She has needed her determination over the years she has spent fighting the real estate company that forced her out of her Madrid apartment last week.(过去这些年,她一直在与那家上周把她赶出马德里公寓的房地产公司抗争,这期间她正需要这份坚定。) She had lived in the flat(公寓) for more than 70 of her 87 years.
Police forced their way into her apartment after a judge approved Abascal’s eviction(驱逐). By then, protesters had gathered around the building, including the actor Carlos Bardem(西班牙演员,哈维尔·巴登之弟), Javier’s brother. Teargas was used against them. Abascal was taken to a Madrid hospital, suffering from anxiety and extreme exhaustion(极度疲惫), while her supporters chanted: “You are not alone.”
Demonstrations of solidarity(团结、声援) with her and “all the other Maricarmens” have since erupt(爆发)ed across Spain, with protest encampments springing up at Puerta del Sol(马德里太阳门广场) square in Madrid as well as in Bilbao and Málaga.
