As a mum to a two-year-old in 2026 there is no shortage of(不乏,大量) things to make me feel bad about my capabilities as a parent. His snacks aren’t always organic or made from scratch(从零开始亲手做). Some of his toys are plastic and noisy, not wooden and Montessori(蒙台梭利教育法)-inspired. And – most heinous(极其恶劣的) of all – he is sometimes allowed screen time(屏幕时间).
Like any good, middle-class millennial(千禧一代) mother, I try to approach it “consciously”. There are specific TV conditions in our house – he can watch post-nap to ward off(抵挡,避免) an afternoon meltdown(情绪崩溃), we always watch together, and we have a strict time-limit of 20 minutes. But more important than how he is watching is what he is watching. OG(原版,元老) Thomas the Tank Engine (complete with Ringo Starr(林戈·斯塔尔,披头士鼓手)’s iconic voiceover(旁白,画外音)), Pingu(《企鹅家族》,瑞士黏土动画), Sesame Street(《芝麻街》,美国经典儿童节目), early Wallace and Gromit(《超级无敌掌门狗》,英国黏土动画). I have joined a growing number of parents who almost exclusively choose 90s TV for their children, the very same(正是同样的) shows we watched as kids.
So the news that Play School(《游戏学校》,英国经典儿童节目) is returning to CBeebies(BBC儿童频道) for a new generation – with the BBC promising to retain(保留,保持) its mix of stories, movement, poetry and imaginative play – is so welcome. There is something deliciously warm and fuzzy(温暖而模糊的) about curling up on the sofa with your toddler to rerun(重播,重温) the TV of your childhood. But the appeal of retro(复古的) screen time is deeper than nostalgia(怀旧). These shows feel different – slower, less frantic(疯狂的,忙乱的).
