Jane Turner is right that end-of‑life care needs fixing (MPs, you told us clearly that end-of-life care(临终关怀) in the UK is broken. So now we need you to fix it, 28 September), and I argue that it needs fixing on two fronts at once(同时在两条战线). My husband, John, died in March aged 43 after nearly six years of bowel cancer(肠癌) treatment. He endured more than 70 rounds of chemotherapy, determined to watch our children grow up.(他挺过了70多轮化疗,一心想看着孩子们长大。) He spent his last three months in a hospice(临终关怀院), receiving the best palliative care on offer(可提供的). Even so, he suffered terribly.
Some pain cannot be controlled quickly, and some suffering cannot be treated at all. One evening he screamed in agony(极度痛苦) while stranded(被困住的) in a bath, unable to move, for nearly an hour before relief took effect. As the cancer swelled his torso(躯干), he slowly suffocate(窒息)d – and no drug could prevent it. He was fully aware throughout, and told me repeatedly that he could not go on(继续活下去). In his last hours, I wore earplugs to bear the sound of his gasp(喘息)ing.
Most hospices are charities that receive very little state funding(政府拨款) – that must change. Better palliative care will spare(使免于) many people needless suffering. But it cannot spare everyone, and no amount of(再多的……也不) funding would have given John what he wanted: the chance to face the inevitable(不可避免的) on his own terms.
