“Halt, stop right there,” shouts a Peruvian Navy Seal(海军海豹突击队), firing warning shots(鸣枪示警) into the air. But the fleeing man pays no attention, scrambling(攀爬,仓皇爬行) up to the rim of a football pitch-sized crater and disappearing into the dense rainforest as the commandos give chase(追赶), swearing and shooting.
Meanwhile, other marines set dynamite charges(炸药包) on a makeshift(临时凑合的) wooden raft that floats in the crater, which is essentially an enormous pit of opaque(不透明的), stagnant(停滞的,不流动的) water. The raft has a diesel-fuelled suction pump motor with thick plastic tubing used to suck up and sift through(筛选,仔细检查) river sediment(沉积物) for tiny particles of gold.
Soon after, a mushroom(蘑菇云;迅速蔓延) of orange and black fumes envelops(笼罩,包裹) the trees – and seconds later comes the sound of the explosion, shattering(打破,粉碎) the peace of the Tambopata National Reserve(坦博帕塔国家保护区), one of Peru’s most prized Amazon parks.
