Christa Pike had asked to be hanged. In the weeks before her botched(搞砸的,失败的) execution by lethal(致命的) injection on 30 September, in which she survived two lethal doses of barbiturate(巴比妥类药物) pentobarbital(戊巴比妥) and had to be hospitalized, Pike and her legal team had challenged Tennessee’s execution protocol(死刑执行规程).
The state’s lethal injection regimen(方案,疗程) had failed before. In May, Tony Carruthers was also sent to Tennessee’s death chamber(死刑室), only to leave alive(结果却活着离开) after prison officials struggled to find a vein(血管,静脉).
In Pike’s case, her lawyers argued, the lethal injection protocol was likely to fail again.
