Only a few months ago, in the spring, there was a sense of giddy(令人目眩的;头晕的) possibility about the Greens. Zack Polanski’s radical(激进的;根本的) new leadership felt fresh and dynamic, especially compared with those of the other parties. Former Labour supporters, in particular, were switching to the Greens in huge numbers(大批地;大量地), Green candidates were winning across the country, and the party was second behind Reform UK(英国改革党,右翼民粹政党) in some national polls.
Like Reform, the Green party presented itself as a revolt against a failed status quo(对失败现状的反叛). Unlike Reform, the Greens’ urgent stance on the climate crisis gave them a potent(强有力的;有说服力的) moral authority: even many people who did not support them believed that the Greens were right about the most universal(普遍的;全人类共有的) issue.
After an unprecedentedly(前所未有地) hot summer, some of that authority and momentum remains. Last week, at the party’s bustling(熙熙攘攘的;繁忙的) conference in Brighton, impressive-sounding statistics(听起来很唬人的统计数据) about the party’s growth this year – along with modern icons of Green success, such as Hannah Spencer, victor of February’s Gorton and Denton byelection – were presented to determinedly cheering delegate(代表;会议代表)s in crammed(挤满的;塞满的) halls.
