Everybody wants the Jewish vote. As if there were one.(仿佛真有这么一张票似的。) Jews are educated, generally liberal. Although they comprise only about 2% of the electorate(全体选民), they vote in high numbers, overwhelmingly for Democrats. In 2024, 79% chose Kamala Harris. They are also assumed to be steadfast(坚定的、忠贞不渝的) friends of Israel, no matter what it does. Republicans, waging a fake war on antisemitism(假惺惺地打一场反犹主义的仗) while court(讨好、拉拢、追求)ing white supremacists, consider Jews increasingly up for grabs(可供争夺的、人人可争取的).
Nationally, Jewish Americans are concentrated in a few bright blue spots. A 2020 map from the Jewish Electorate Institute showed a third of Jews living in 20 congressional districts – out of 435 – most of them in New York, New Jersey, California and (purple) Florida.(犹太选民研究所2020年的一张分布图显示,三分之一的犹太人居住在435个国会选区中的20个里,其中大多数在纽约、新泽西、加利福尼亚和(摇摆的)佛罗里达。) Of these, only one sent a Republican to Washington.
Today, it’s two. Florida’s 21st district switched parties only after falling victim to redistricting(重新划分选区) in 2022. The other outlier(例外、异类) has elected the pro-Israel, anti-immigration Republican Chris Smith every term since 1981. Why? The mapmakers’ explanation: New Jersey fourth district includes Lakewood, where half the residents are ultra-Orthodox – scrupulously(一丝不苟地、谨小慎微地), ceaselessly observant(遵守教规的、虔诚的). Unsurprisingly, among white voters, regular religious service attendance is a big predictor of(……
