Rampton high-security hospital in Nottinghamshire was built in 1912. Everything about the bleak(阴郁的,荒凉的), remote facility for mentally ill people is forbidding(令人生畏的), says Jan Neate. “I get really upset going there,” she says. “Even though I really want to see Jake, visiting is an ordeal(折磨,煎熬).”
Jake, 45, is Neate’s son. He has been held at Rampton for eight years. In 2017, many years after being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia(偏执型精神分裂症), he killed his partner, Suzanne Brown, and was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial.
When Neate visits him, her fingerprints and biometrics(生物识别信息) are taken before she is escort(护送,押送)ed in. Jake is searched when he is brought into the room and searched again when he leaves. Mother and son are permitted a hug, which is often distressing(令人痛苦的). “Both of us usually cry when we hug,” says Neate. “It reminds me of what our lives were like before and I think it reminds Jake of that, too.(这让我想起我们从前的生活,我想杰克也会想起。)”
