The first thing I learned on the streets of Paris this weekend is that there is no arguing with(无法与…… I arrived at Place de la République(巴黎共和国广场,法国抗议文化的标志性场所) just after 1pm yesterday. The mood was festive until police started firing volley((枪炮、催泪弹等的)齐射,连发)s of teargas into the square from Rue du Faubourg-du-Temple.
I didn’t see the inciting(煽动性的,引发(事件)的) incident – if there even was one – and tried walking into the cloud of CS gas(CS催泪瓦斯(一种防暴化学剂)) hanging in the air. It was impossible. The gas clings to your nose and burns your eyes, and you quickly start struggling to breathe(呼吸困难,挣扎着喘气). I retreat(撤退,退却)ed towards the Boulevard de Magenta, blinking furiously to stop the stinging.
This approach to the crowd had been adopted by the authorities early in the day, causing chaos across the city and setting the tone for what would follow. A friend had to return to her home with her elderly parents because police had fired teargas “at random(随机地,任意地)” at a crowd of young people in Strasbourg-Saint-Denis in the 10th arrondissement(巴黎的行政区划单位(区)).
