Every Friday night on a community sports field in Melbourne’s inner north, a few hundred nerds(书呆子) dress up(装扮,穿上盛装) in historical armour and attack each other with foam latex swords. It’s live action role play: turbocharged(加强版的,涡轮增压的) Dungeons & Dragons(《龙与地下城》桌游) meets medieval re-enactment(中世纪历史重演).
I’ve been Larping for seven years. It’s the biggest thing in my life outside of comedy, and the two scenes(圈子,亚文化场景) have a lot in common. Everyone’s broke(身无分文的,破产的). Everyone was bullied(被霸凌的) in high school. No one gets into Larp or standup if things are going well.(如果日子过得顺,没人会去玩Larp或说单口喜剧。)
The biggest commonality(共同点) is the gatekeeping(守门行为,排外门槛). A crusted(老掉牙的,积习难改的) old comic in the corner of a greenroom(后台休息室) gasps: “You’re a fan of standup, are you? Name three of Carl Barron(澳大利亚著名单口喜剧演员)’s best jokes.” His Larp counterpart(对应的人或物), a polyamorous(多角恋的) he/they(他/他们(性别代词)) in a top hat with a cog on it, twirls a cane: “So you like Warhammer Fantasy Battle(《战锤奇幻战役》桌游)? Name three spells an elven cleric can use in combat.” I’d like to see those two sit down and collectively name three women who feel safe around them.(我倒想看看这两个人坐下来,一起说出三个在他们身边感到安全的女性。)
