HBO’s Girls is coming back, Lena Dunham and her fellow cast members announced this week, and the internet is already abuzz(议论纷纷). Women of a certain age(某个年龄段的女性), myself included – approaching, turning or having turned 40 – are genuinely thrilled, if also slightly trepidatious(忐忑不安的). When you’ve loved, loathed and most importantly grown with(与……一同成长) characters in the way many of us did with Girls, you feel protective of a show’s legacy. But with Dunham, I’m confident it is in good hands(得到妥善照料).
Girls means a lot to me, in part because it was the topic of my first ever column for this newspaper: in 2012, shortly after the show premiered(首播), it was already generating a bananas amount of(海量的) internet discourse(网络讨论) and I was on work experience(在做实习). I was in my early 20s and not long off the dole(刚领完失业救济). I didn’t share the privilege of Dunham’s characters, which is perhaps why I so enjoyed how she skewered(辛辣讽刺) it. (I never understood the criticism that the show was about spoilt rich girls. So many people missed the satire(讽刺).) Yet there were aspects of it that I related to, as I wrote at the time:
“The experiences of Dunham’s characters, where they languish(困顿、煎熬) in unpaid jobs and have emotionless, awkward sex in grotty(破旧肮脏的) flats with pretentious(自命不凡的) males, resonate(引起共鸣) … with my experience and that of my friends.”
