Residents with advanced dementia lined the day room, glazed stares or sleeping mouths agape, with that terrible human vacancy everyone most fears for their own end days.(重度失智症患者坐满日间活动室,目光呆滞或张嘴沉睡,流露出人人最怕自己临终遭遇的可怕空洞。)
This was Millvina House in Anfield, Liverpool, which I visited with Louise Casey, who is heading the commission on social care in England, last week. Here is a snippet(片段、一小段) of what she saw: an angry man jolt(猛然一动)ing into life, shooting out his arm at her and bellow(怒吼、大声喊叫)ing: “Out! Get out! Get out!” A young care assistant went to stroke his back and calm him down. It’s a hard job, and part of it is watching for warning signs of aggression(攻击行为), one of dementia’s dreadful symptoms. “People don’t want to know,” Casey said, “but if you are born, you will die. Chances are you will need care, and dementia is the biggest killer.”(“人们不愿面对,”凯西说,“但只要你出生,就终有一死。
In her travels she has been appalled(感到震惊、骇然) by the standards of social care she has found in some places, with so many people getting far too little help. The evening before this visit, she had been out with care workers attending to people at home. She said she had come away(离开时(带着某种感受)) “profoundly, deeply shocked”. She had photographed an elderly man with diabetes, swollen legs and a stroke affecting his left side, who was unable to open a bottle of water.(她拍下了一位患有糖尿病、双腿浮肿、中风影响左侧身体的老人,他连一瓶水都拧不开。) He had no relatives nearby. “He couldn’t afford more care, so he’d just cut their visits by half.” Then there was a woman with early dementia and an untreated, infected stoma bag, which she said had looked “so sore”.(还有一位患有早期失智症的女士,造口袋感染却未得到治疗,凯西说那看起来“非常疼痛”。)
