The new series of Time is not an easy watch(看着不轻松). The opening seconds of Jimmy McGovern’s prison drama show a normal woman on a normal bus, as it drives up a normal road.(吉米·麦戈文的监狱剧开场几秒,让一位普通女性坐在一辆普通公交车上,车沿着一条普通道路行驶。) But to the right of that road is a huge concrete wall, topped with barbed wire(带刺铁丝网) and CCTV(闭路电视监控) cameras.
The wall is only partly visible, just as prisons themselves tend to occupy a space towards the very edges of our thoughts.(这堵墙只露出一部分,正如监狱本身往往只占据我们思绪最边缘的位置。) They exist, but not as part of normal life. But McGovern’s drama shows just how permeable(可渗透的) that wall is.
The show’s fictional young offender institution(少年犯管教所), HMYOI Alderwick, is a place that boils with anger(怒火沸腾). As new arrivals enter the prison, an officer tells them: “Keep going, ignore the noise.” As if you ever could.(说得好像你真能做到似的。) The sound of prisoners shouting and kicking their cell doors is an assault on the ears(对耳朵的摧残). Those scenes are louder than any headline, of which there are plenty these days; overcrowding, escapes from custody, the latest early-release scheme.(这些场景比任何新闻标题都更响亮,而如今这类标题多得是:过度拥挤、越狱、最新的提前释放计划。) What McGovern does is crank the volume so loud it’s impossible to block out(把音量调到震耳欲聋,无法屏蔽).
