In 1956 a letter arrived for George Brown. The Social Psychiatry Research Unit in Camberwell, south London, needed an anthropology graduate and Brown had been recommended by a former tutor. Since graduating two years before, he had had only numbing(令人麻木的) jobs including supervising time and motion studies(工时与动作研究), and he leaped at the chance(迫不及待地抓住机会).

Brown, who has died aged 95, went on to have a six-decade academic career, becoming a pre-eminent medical sociologist, definitively establishing the importance of social and environmental factors in mental illness.(布朗去世,享年95岁;他此后走过六十年学术生涯,成为首屈一指的医学社会学家,确凿地确立了社会与环境因素在精神疾病中的重要性。)

With the arrival of antipsychotic(抗精神病的) drugs in the 1950s, psychiatry was preoccupied with(一心关注) chemical imbalances that could be corrected with medication, but the Social Psychiatry Research Unit, set up in 1948, wanted to study mental illness through a broader lens(以更宽广的视角). A third of mental patients admitted to the Maudsley hospital(伦敦著名的精神病专科医院) in south London had schizophrenia(精神分裂症) and the unit was researching how patients and families coped when they left hospital.
