The story of Lebanon’s last remaining church-bell maker begins with a rifle(步枪). In the 18th century, Youssef Gabriel, a local metalworker(金属工匠), was secretly making and equipping Arab revolutionaries with rifles to assist their revolt(反抗,起义) against the Ottoman empire(奥斯曼帝国), which controlled Lebanon at the time.
Then, one day, a Russian engineer came to the Lebanese town of Beit Chabab to make a church bell. Gabriel, intrigued(被吸引,好奇), shadowed(尾随,跟踪) the man and picked up the process on sight(一看就学会了).
Or, another story goes, the Maronite(马龙派) patriarch(宗主教) at the time, frustrated by the Ottoman empire blocking the import of church bells to Mount Lebanon, tasked(委派任务) Gabriel with making a bell. After several attempts he succeeded and decided to give up making arms, converting his gunsmithery(枪械作坊) into Lebanon’s first church-bell foundry(铸造厂).
