Deep in the misty fjords(峡湾) of New Zealand’s South Island, a team of researchers is trying to catch one of the world’s most elusive(难以捉摸的) penguins: the forest-dwelling tawaki, or Fiordland crested penguin. For weeks, researchers stand sentry(站岗放哨) each day over a burrow(洞穴) on Eleanor Island, hoping to corner the female bird(堵住雌鸟) so they can retrieve(取回) data from its tagging device.
But this penguin has developed a clever exit strategy(逃脱策略) – digging multiple tunnels to elude(躲避) its captors(捕捉者).
