It’s a strange time to be a Green. We have just held our largest conference ever, but it was overshadowed(使黯然失色；蒙上阴影) by a controversial motion(动议；提案) that was attacked by the media as racist. Then, when we lost a byelection(补选) in a Camden(伦敦卡姆登区，工党传统票仓) seat that is so Labour it has estates named after Blair-era ministers(工党根基深到有以布莱尔时代大臣命名的住宅区), the headlines called for Zack Polanski(绿党领袖，2025年崛起) to resign.

It does, however, mark the end of phase one for Polanski’s Greens. Polanski burst on to the political scene(横空出世，登上政治舞台) in 2025 and ate up attention(吸尽眼球，占尽关注), enjoying an easy monopoly on hope(对“希望”的垄断) while Labour was sucked into the black hole of Starmerism(被吸入“斯塔默主义”的黑洞). But Burnham’s honeymoon(蜜月期；初期和谐阶段) already seems to be ending. John Healey’s budget of “difficult decisions” and “fiscal responsibility” is likely to disappoint everyone but the financial markets, and a winter energy bill crisis driven by a possible El Niño deep freeze is just one of many problems he’ll soon have to face.(希利的预算除了金融市场外可能让所有人失望，而厄尔尼诺引发的冬季能源账单危机只是他即将面对的众多问题之一。)

One school of thought says Polanski can carry on as before(照旧行事，一如既往), focusing on points of difference(分歧点，差异之处) with Labour. Healey announces a no-change(维持现状的，无变化的) budget; Polanski calls for a tax on wealth(财富税) to fund public services. Angela Rayner(英国工党副领袖，住房大臣) sides with landlords over renters(在房东与租客之间站在房东一边); Polanski proposes an emergency rent brake(租金刹车（限制租金上涨的政策）) and explores Berlin’s plan to expropriate(柏林征用大型房东房产的公投运动) the properties of corporate landlords.
