Seven or eight years ago, a new kind of televisual(电视的) entertainment was born in China. Microdramas: over-the-top, soap opera-type series with splashy, schlocky premises such as infidelity, arranged marriage and secret billionairehood, in which each episode is a mere 60-90 seconds long, took off there among an audience of the phone-addicted.(微短剧:情节夸张、肥皂剧式的剧集,以出轨、包办婚姻、秘密亿万富翁身份等花哨俗套的设定为卖点,每集仅60到90秒,在手机成瘾的观众中迅速走红。)
And now, as with many cultural phenomena that start in China, microdramas have made it over here. The form is forecast(预测) to take in(获得(收入)) $1.5bn in revenue(收入) in the US by the end of this year. Channel 4 announced recently that it was launch(推出)ing its first microdrama, and the UK is already leading Europe in terms of(在……方面) microdrama-watching, with 8.2 million of us tuning in to these things every month.
Numbers such as this give me a queasy, vertiginous feeling about the vast difference in possible human experiences existing alongside each other at the same time.(这样的数字让我感到一阵恶心和眩晕,因为人类可能同时经历着如此巨大的差异。) What do you mean, millions and millions of people are watching this stuff that seems, to me, catastrophically brainless and objectively bad?(你什么意思,数以百万计的人在观看这种在我看来极其无脑、客观上很糟糕的东西?) Who? What do they eat for breakfast? What do they dream of at night?
