In the 1976 movie Network, news anchor Howard Beale tells TV viewers to stick their heads out their windows and yell: “I’m as mad as hell(怒不可遏), and I’m not going to take this any more!” It’s a sentiment that resonate(引起共鸣)s today in Australia and across the world.

In October, consumer sentiment at home fell to levels more often associated with recessions, despite the fact that the latest GDP numbers show the economy grew by a real 2% over the year to June (that is, 2% over and above the rate of inflation).(10月,国内消费者信心跌至通常只在衰退时期才会出现的水平,尽管最新GDP数据显示,截至6月的一年里经济实际增长2%(即扣除通胀后仍增长2%)。)

But there are plenty of reasons why Australians are unhappy and even angry. The combination of war-induced(战争引发的) energy shocks, rising tariff(关税)s, ageing populations, increased military spending, more frequent climate shocks and even the datacentre frenzy(狂热、疯狂) are all pushing up inflation and public-sector debt, which in turn(进而、反过来) have led to rising interest rates. These are not short-term trends. Add to that falling house prices, rising unemployment, rising inequality and a general malaise around what AI might or might not do, and you might wonder why sentiment isn’t even lower.(再加上房价下跌、失业率上升、不平等加剧,以及人们对人工智能究竟能做什么、不能做什么普遍感到不安,你或许会奇怪:为什么消费者信心没有更低?)
