We’re herded(被驱赶、被赶着走) into a sterile(毫无生气的、冷冰冰的) elevator by a woman in navy camouflage fatigues and carried up to the 11th floor, overlooking Parramatta(悉尼西部的中央商务区)’s central business district on a dreary(阴沉的、沉闷的) afternoon in Sydney’s west.
At the front of the room, dressed in a khaki(卡其色、土黄色) green uniform behind a lectern(讲台、读经台), stands army corporal Joel Kellner. In the corner, a portrait of King Charles III(英国国王、澳大利亚国家元首) rests on a wooden easel(画架).
“We’ll start with a rabble rouser(煽动人心者、煽动性内容),” Kellner says in a raspy(沙哑刺耳的) drawl(拖腔、慢吞吞的说话方式), clicking the projector into gear. A fighter jet roars over the ocean. Keyboards rattle in a neon-lit situation room(作战室、指挥中心). Soldiers blast their way through a doorway with explosives. Cue pulsing soundtrack and energetic voiceover(画外音、旁白):
‘The army feels irreplaceable’
‘I had a very positive career’
‘If there is a conflict, it’s probably going to be major’
