The hereditary(世袭的) prince of Liechtenstein has used his veto for the first time in his reign to quash(推翻、废止) a bill aimed at bringing abortion laws in line with(与……一致) much of Europe.
The legislation(立法、法律) was approved by Liechtenstein’s parliament last month after the presentation of a citizens’ initiative(公民倡议) signed by roughly(大约) a quarter of the nation’s voters.
The news left campaigners in the principality(公国), home to some of the strictest abortion laws in Europe, reeling. “We’re not really surprised, but still disappointed,” said Tatjana As’Ad, who led the initiative to overhaul the law and who works for the small leftwing party, Free List.(“我们其实并不意外,但依然失望,”塔季扬娜·阿萨德说,她领导了修法倡议,供职于小型左翼政党“自由名单”。) “It’s surreal(荒诞离奇的) what’s happening right now in 2026 in a state in the middle of Europe.”
